Mafia: The Old Country is unexpectedly getting a story expansion this August. The first trailer for the DLC, titled Man of Honor, confirms that Don Salieri will make a return. Salieri was a key antagonist in the original Mafia game. Priced at just $10, the expansion launches on August 14th, adding two new story chapters set in the middle of the main game's narrative, plus additional Free Ride content.
The new missions take place in winter 1905, where Enzo assists Ennio Salieri after his release from prison. Players can expect new weapons, vehicles, and environments.
In an interview with Polygon, associate design director Josh Zammit explained the decision to revisit Salieri long before he becomes the crime boss known from the original Mafia. "We dive into some of the stories about what [Salieri] was doing beforehand, stuff that players of the previous games won't know," Zammit said. "Ultimately, his goal to get to America is his driving factor at this point. And maybe that plays into the later story, right? Plants a little bit of a seed in Enzo's head about what he might want to do with his future."
The announcement came as a surprise since Mafia: The Old Country was designed as a smaller-scale title. Released last year for $50, it's not a massive AAA open-world game but was a significant hit, prompting Hanger 13 to continue supporting it.
Our review gave the game an 8/10, praising it as "a conventional but effective return to the linear and tightly story-driven format of the original Mafia and Mafia II, with a wonderful eye and ear for detail."
