Ubisoft has announced that Assassin's Creed Shadows will receive its last update on June 16, marking the end of significant new content for the game. While minor tweaks and bug fixes may still come, Title Update 1.1.11 is described as 'one last update' for the samurai blockbuster, arriving only 15 months after launch.
Fans have expressed disappointment over the limited post-launch support compared to the hugely successful Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Shadows received only one expansion, Claws of Awaji, in its first year before Ubisoft confirmed it was winding down support. Comparisons with Valhalla are tricky, as that game launched during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 when more people were at home gaming.
Shadows is now being followed by the highly anticipated Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, which Ubisoft likely wants to avoid overshadowing. However, with a rumored co-op expansion scrapped that would have continued the story, fans lament the lack of character development. Additionally, with no sales figures shared in nearly a year, there's a sense that Shadows didn't perform well enough to sustain ongoing support, especially with Black Flag and the witchcraft-themed Assassin's Creed Hexe on the horizon.
'Still can’t believe this is how the game ended up. After all this time of waiting for a Japan setting and it just came and went,' wrote galaxyadmirer on Reddit. 'Letdown is an understatement,' agreed ShawshankException. 'The story ended the second it got interesting and then was entirely ignored in the DLC.'
In a tease, assistant game director Simon Lemay-Comtois hinted that a 'black tide was coming to Japan,' suggesting this final update may tease Black Flag Resynced. Fans hope Naoe and Yasuke get one last adventure.
