Larian Studios' critically acclaimed fantasy RPG Baldur's Gate 3 is getting the television treatment on HBO, with The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin leading the adaptation. According to Deadline, the series will serve as a direct continuation of the game's story, exploring events after the world-altering conclusion of Baldur's Gate 3 and following the beloved characters as they deal with the aftermath.

Craig Mazin, who successfully adapted The Last of Us with Neil Druckmann, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, telling Deadline: "After spending nearly 1000 hours in the incredible world of Baldur's Gate 3, it's a dream come true to continue the story crafted by Larian and Wizards of the Coast. As a devoted Dungeons & Dragons fan, I have immense respect for how Swen Vincke and his talented team brought this universe to life. I'm committed to honoring Baldur's Gate with the utmost care and gratitude to Gabe Marano and Hasbro for this opportunity."

The series will feature both returning characters from Baldur's Gate 3 and new additions to the cast. Mazin plans to consult with the original game's voice actors about potentially reprising their roles, similar to how The Last of Us incorporated Merle Dandridge as Marlene. With no other Baldur's Gate projects currently in development, Mazin has creative freedom to shape the narrative, though he'll need to address the game's multiple endings to establish a canonical conclusion.

Fans might have to wait a while for the show's premiere, as Mazin is currently focused on completing production for The Last of Us, which is preparing for its third and possibly final season.
