The creative minds behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 have achieved a remarkable distinction, being knighted under the French Order of Arts and Letters. This honor recognizes their exceptional contributions to art and culture in France.
Sandfall Interactive, the French studio responsible for the game, shared the exciting news this week through a LinkedIn post. The announcement featured photos of the delighted team proudly displaying the medals presented to them by the French Ministry of Culture.
While similar in prestige to a British knighthood, this French accolade does not permit recipients to use the title "Sir." Nevertheless, it remains a highly coveted award, granted to only 200 individuals worldwide each year for creating works of outstanding cultural significance.
Since its release in April 2025, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has garnered widespread praise from both players and critics. The game made history at last year's Game Awards, securing nine wins out of its record-breaking 13 nominations. IGN also honored it as their Game of 2025.
In celebration, the team declared, "From Expeditioners to Knights!" They elaborated, "Yesterday, we were welcomed at the Ministry of Culture to celebrate our game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. As a result, the members of Sandfall Interactive were awarded the Order of Arts and Letters. This honor humbles us, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to our team who crafted this world and the millions of players who have brought it to life. We hope our journey inspires all aspiring creators to pursue their own projects."
Recognition from the French Ministry of Culture for video game achievements is uncommon, and it is unprecedented for an entire studio to receive such an honor. The first game creator to be knighted was in 2006, when Michel Ancel, designer of Rayman, Rabbids, and Beyond Good & Evil, was honored alongside Nintendo icon Shigeru Miyamoto and Alone in the Dark creator Frederick Raynal. Similarly, Nintendo's veteran Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma received this distinction in 2023.
In IGN's review of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, we praised it as a "modern RPG classic," noting, "With its inspirations proudly displayed, the game carves its place among the great RPGs with an innovative combat system and a compelling, emotional narrative."
