Blizzard has announced that Overwatch, following its recent rebranding, experienced its highest weekend player numbers in more than a year across all platforms, coinciding with the official launch of Season 1 today. This surge in player activity comes on the heels of last week's Spotlight event, which revealed the game is dropping the '2' from its title, introducing multiple new heroes, and launching a year-long interconnected storyline.
The return of players was further boosted by the early access release of the new hero Anran, with Blizzard promptly responding to feedback from fans and the character's English voice actress regarding design adjustments. Earlier this week, it was noted that Overwatch saw particularly strong performance on Steam, achieving its best player count since the platform launch. Additionally, last week's announcements included confirmation of a Nintendo Switch 2 port, set to arrive during the upcoming Season 2.
Here's a breakdown of what's available with the start of Season 1:
● Five New Heroes at Launch: Players can immediately try out five new heroes, with five more scheduled to debut throughout 2026 (one per season).
○ Domina (Tank): A long-range, zone-control Stalwart Tank hero who serves as vice president of the Vishkar Corporation.
○ Emre (Damage): A fast-paced, run-and-gun Specialist Damage hero enhanced with cybernetic upgrades.
○ Mizuki (Support): A versatile Survivor Support hero associated with the Hashimoto clan.
○ Anran (Damage): A fire-wielding Flanker Damage hero, a new Overwatch recruit, and the older sister of Wuyang.
○ Jetpack Cat (Support): A permanently flying feline Tactician Support hero known for quick reflexes and Hero towing abilities.
● The Reign of Talon: For the first time, Overwatch is unfolding a fully connected narrative over an entire year, focusing on Talon's rise under new leadership. This story will be told through a new cinematic, ongoing motion comics, animated Hero trailers, short stories, and more.
● Conquest Meta Event: This five-week faction-based event allows players to align with either Overwatch or Talon, completing missions and earning rewards.
● Gameplay, Competitive, and Systems Updates: Season 1 introduces new role sub-roles and passives for all Heroes, a competitive year reset with rewards and rarity titles, Stadium updates, a complete UI/UX refresh, and new systems like Praise.
● Overwatch x Hello Kitty and Friends Collaboration: Available now through February 24, this crossover features colorful skins inspired by Hello Kitty and Friends, along with themed extras such as name cards, sprays, and emotes. Skins include:
○ Juno as Hello Kitty
○ Widowmaker as Kuromi
○ Mercy as Pompompurrin
○ D.Va as My Melody
○ Kiriko as Cinnamoroll
● Skins and Cosmetics: Season 1 offers faction-themed skins, new themed bundles, a Mercy Celestial Guardian Mythic, Juno's Star Shooter Mythic Weapon, and a refreshed Lootbox pool including skins from the past six seasons.
Looking ahead, Overwatch's Season 2 will introduce a new hero, mythics, and celebrations for the game's 10-year anniversary this spring. Season 3, due this summer, adds another hero alongside the Japan Night map and more mythics. Season 4, also set for later this summer, will feature yet another new hero and activities tied to BlizzCon and the Overwatch World Cup.
