Overwatch fans have been flocking back in droves since the game's rebranding and shift to a "story-driven era," but the latest milestone is truly staggering. The relaunched hero shooter hasn't just matched its original Steam debut enthusiasm—it has more than doubled the platform's concurrent player peak from 2023.

Recall that Blizzard's sequel initially struggled after launch, despite a massive initial player surge that dwindled over the following year. User reviews frequently cited issues like monetization and the cancellation of the highly anticipated PvE Hero mode as ongoing concerns.

Now, with the debut of the first year-long storyline, The Reign of Talon, on February 10, Overwatch—formerly known as Overwatch 2—has shattered its previous Steam concurrent peak of 75,608. While player numbers had already spiked over the weekend, Sunday's peak of 69,135 simultaneous gamers was nearly tripled overnight. SteamDB recorded an impressive 165,651 concurrent Steam players, signaling a strong start for the game's reboot.

The Reign of Talon centers on the antagonistic faction Talon as it attempts global domination, with Overwatch fighting back. This narrative will unfold across six seasons throughout the year, featuring in-game events, hero trailers, animated comics, short stories, and map updates. The season kicked off yesterday with the introduction of five new heroes: Domina (tank), Emre (damage), Mizuki (support), Anran (damage)—who some players encountered over the weekend—and Jetpack Cat (support). Additional heroes will join in Seasons 2 through 6, with a new story arc set to begin with another Season 1 in 2027.

Other highlights include a Hello Kitty-themed in-game event running from February 10 to 23, and a new Meta Event called Conquest. In Conquest, players can align with either Overwatch or Talon over five weeks to compete for rewards like lootboxes, skins, and titles. The update also brings a major UI and UX overhaul, featuring a new hero lobby and promises of faster navigation.
