Bungie has reaffirmed the release date for Marathon during the February 2026 State of Play, setting the sci-fi extraction shooter for launch on March 5. The announcement came alongside details for a weeklong server slam event, offering players early access ahead of the official release.
During the presentation, the studio behind Halo showcased more gameplay from Marathon, giving fans a fresh look at the title. Those eager to experience the game can participate in the server slam scheduled from February 26 through March 2. In a separate video, Bungie outlined what the event includes: access to two playable zones, six runner shells, and opening contracts for five factions, with progress rewarding bonus loot at launch.
Marathon's development has faced significant challenges. Originally revealed in May 2023 as a reboot of the classic franchise, the project has been marred by multiple rounds of layoffs and the firing of its former director following a misconduct investigation. More recently, Bungie initiated a 'thorough review' after uncredited artwork was discovered in the game, raising concerns among fans about the studio's future and the competitive extraction shooter genre. Initially slated for September 23, 2025, the release was delayed indefinitely based on alpha test feedback before being rescheduled for March 2026.
