Sony's recent State of Play broadcast concluded with the surprise announcement and immediate release of God of War: Sons of Sparta, a side-scrolling spin-off. The PlayStation Store listing indicates 1-2 player support, but players are struggling to locate any two-player functionality.

Early adopters who purchased the game for $29.99 and explored Kratos' origins report that his brother Deimos only appears at specific moments. There are no multiplayer options in the game menus, and connecting a second PS5 controller doesn't unlock any additional features. This has led many to believe the store description might be inaccurate, as it currently stands as the sole evidence suggesting co-op play exists.

Fans on Reddit and social media initially found the listing plausible, noting the plural title "Sons of Sparta," in-game footage showing both brothers battling bosses together, and cover art depicting them fighting side-by-side. The official description adds to the ambiguity, referencing both characters: "Experience an untold chapter in Kratos' journey set during the harsh years of Spartan training alongside his brother Deimos... After a fellow cadet goes missing, Kratos and Deimos vow to find him and embark on an adventure that will put their training and Spartan spirit to the test."

God of War enthusiast Mephistocheles shared on Reddit, "Just got it installed and running. So far it's not allowing drop-in play on a second controller, and there were no two-player options on the start menu. Will update if I find it does allow co-op, but it doesn't look like it." Another user, bob_th4_build3r, expressed disappointment: "I bought it instantly because I thought it would be co-op… maybe they will add it in the future?"

Some players are now contacting PlayStation's customer support, while others have attempted to request refunds. IGN has reached out to PlayStation and developer Mega Cat Studios for clarification on the game's multiplayer capabilities.

In other news from the State of Play, Sony also revealed a God of War Trilogy Remake, though development at Sony Santa Monica is still in its early stages. For more details, check out the full recap of announcements from the broadcast.
