Konami has officially confirmed that Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 will not include the Metal Gear Online multiplayer component originally bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The publisher revealed this detail alongside numerous other specifications for its upcoming collection of ports on its official website.
While information about both MGS4 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was shared, a brief statement confirmed the multiplayer mode from the 2008 PlayStation 3 release will not be revived when the collection launches on additional platforms this August. This version of Metal Gear Online debuted alongside MGS4 in June 2008, offering various game modes including team deathmatch and special scenarios where one player could embody Old Snake. The service received multiple expansions before Konami discontinued its servers in 2012.
Although resurrecting MGS4's multiplayer appears too challenging for the current project, the second volume won't be entirely devoid of online features. Konami's website confirms that Peace Walker's port will support online multiplayer, unlike the first installment of the collection. The returning Co-Ops mode enables two-to-four players to collaborate on missions from the Big Boss era, while Versus Ops caters to competitive fans with matches for up to six participants. Local wireless play will be available exclusively for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 versions.
For fans disappointed by the absence of Metal Gear Online, Konami has announced several enhancements for MGS4's single-player experience. According to a PlayStation.Blog post, the new version will boast improved internal resolution, increased maximum framerate, and customizable controls. Peace Walker will also feature custom controls, though visual upgrades remain unconfirmed. The included bonus title Ghost Babel (2000) won't revive its two-player Vs. Battle mode but will include screen filters, pixel-perfect display options, a rewind function, and custom controls.
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is scheduled for release on August 27, 2026, for PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders will grant access to the Cardboard Camouflage for MGS4 and the Love Box uniform for Peace Walker. Players with save data from Vol. 1 will additionally receive Gold Camouflage and Gold uniform items.
