Shutaro Ida, a revered figure in the gaming world, has passed away at age 52 following a year-and-a-half struggle with pancreatic cancer. His family shared the heartbreaking news through a statement posted on his official X account on February 15. In response, his longtime collaborator Koji Igarashi has made a solemn promise to finish Ida's upcoming metroidvania, Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement. This title serves as the sequel to the acclaimed 2019 game Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, which itself was heavily inspired by the Castlevania series.

Shutaro Ida (also known as Shutaro Iida) dedicated nearly two decades to Konami from 1996 to 2015, primarily as a programmer. His most significant impact was on the Castlevania franchise, where he helped transition the gothic action series into the sixth and seventh console generations. Starting with Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow on the GBA and Castlevania: Lament of Innocence on the PS2, Ida's contributions were pivotal. He later directed Castlevania: Harmony of Despair for the Xbox 360 and PS3 and served as a lead programmer on Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain.

After leaving Konami, Ida joined ArtPlay, the independent development studio co-founded by former Castlevania producer Koji "Iga" Igarashi. At ArtPlay, Ida took on the roles of designer and director for the crowdfunded hit Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, with Igarashi producing. The game was met with critical praise, earning an 8.8 in our review, where we highlighted its striking resemblance to the iconic Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, cementing its status as a spiritual successor.

In a heartfelt tribute, Igarashi reflected on their two-decade partnership, stating, "I've collaborated with him since Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. It's no exaggeration to say that many games celebrated as masterpieces wouldn't have succeeded without his exceptional talent." He added, "Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night's triumph owes much to his unwavering support. For over 20 years, he was the type of person who lived and breathed games, approaching development with relentless passion. I hope he finds peace now, as he always gave it his all."

Ida's final project, Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement, is currently in development and slated for release later this year. Igarashi emphasized that this game represents Ida's heartfelt dedication, vowing, "We will honor his vision and ensure it is completed properly, so we don't let him down."

In his last X post on January 30, Ida expressed that he felt his time was running short as his strength waned daily. He concluded with a simple plea: "Please love Bloodstained 2 and all the games I made." His family's statement resonated with this sentiment, noting, "Shutaro's journey in this world has ended, but his creations live on. We'd be delighted if people continue to enjoy the games he brought to life."
