Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker, the creative minds behind Invincible, are teaming up once again to expand the beloved superhero universe with a new narrative. They are crafting the origin story of Ella Mental, a fresh character set to debut in the upcoming fighting game Invincible VS.

This origin tale will be featured as a recurring backup segment in Capes, a Skybound comic series that also exists within the Invincible Universe. Skybound is currently re-releasing the original six issues of Capes, co-created by Kirkman and Mark Englehert, in a remastered format. Starting with Capes #7, co-writer Benito Cereno will join the series to explore new plotlines, while Kirkman and Walker will launch their Ella Mental backup story.

Ella Mental, as noted, is a new addition to the Invincible Universe and will first appear in Invincible VS, which is scheduled for release on April 30. She is a heroine endowed with the power to manipulate the four classical elements: air, fire, earth, and water.

In a statement, Kirkman expressed his enthusiasm: "I'm thrilled that Capes continues to weave tales in the Invincible Universe, but why not expand it simultaneously? It's fantastic to collaborate with Cory Walker again on creating Ella Mental, a character you'll adore in Invincible VS and whose origins you can discover in Capes. How awesome is that? I aim to keep creating characters with Cory forever!"

Walker added, "I'm excited to partner with Robert one more time to breathe life into an original character."

This announcement arrives during a bustling period for the Invincible franchise. Beyond the April launch of Invincible VS, the animated series will return for Season 4 on Prime Video on March 18. Additionally, March sees the comeback of Kirkman and Ryan Ottley's spinoff comic, Invincible Presents: Battle Beast.

The Ella Mental backup story will be serialized in Capes issues #7 through #12, with issue #7 hitting shelves on May 27. Fans can preorder copies at their local comic shops.
