Hideki Kamiya, the celebrated director behind Resident Evil 2, has voiced strong opinions on game leaks and spoilers, stating that individuals who take pleasure in spoiling surprises for others "deserve a thousand deaths" and should be "cursed to never be able to play games again."
His comments emerge as spoilers for Resident Evil Requiem spread widely online, despite Capcom's pledge to take "firm action" against the perpetrators. The developer indicated that the "large number of gameplay videos" circulating—some featuring major spoilers and clips from the game's ending, which IGN confirmed as authentic—likely came from copies acquired "through illegal means."
In a recent Twitter/X post, translated via machine (which may introduce inaccuracies or loss of nuance), Kamiya also recalled how spoilers affected Resident Evil 2's launch. "I'm sure the final developments of [Resident Evil 2] were also exposed in a weekly photo magazine…" he wrote. "For your own selfish satisfaction, you trample on the feelings of the users who were looking forward to the game, as well as the feelings of the creators who put all their effort into making it. It's a despicable act that destroys the happiness of everyone, and deserves a thousand deaths... May you be cursed to never be able to play games again..."
Capcom emphasized that sharing these videos violates copyright laws and is "an act that offends other customers." However, the publisher's options appear limited, with plans to remove the videos or issue "warnings" as primary responses.
Fortunately, the wait is nearly over, as Resident Evil Requiem launches on February 27, just days away. IGN, after experiencing about four hours of gameplay, expressed heightened excitement for the series, noting, "After getting hands-on with a total of about four hours of Resident Evil 9 Requiem at this point, and sharing that experience with colleagues, I’m more excited for the series than I have been in recent memory. It’s the old mixed with the new, but all in a modern package with two protagonists I already like a lot."
