The original Final Fantasy VII is receiving a fresh update on Steam. This isn't the remake, but the genuine, classic game itself.

Announced last month and launched today, this revamped version of Final Fantasy VII introduces several new features as detailed on the store page. An official announcement confirms that this updated edition includes a 3x speed mode, an option to disable random encounters, a 'battle enhancement' mode that maximizes the Limit gauge and allows HP/MP recovery during fights, and an autosave function.

This new version will take the place of the 2013 edition on the Steam store, making the older version unavailable for purchase. However, existing owners of the 2013 version will get the new one at no extra cost and can keep both versions in their libraries. Importantly, save files are not transferable between the two versions, so players will need to start fresh to experience the re-release.

This update brings the game in line with other modern console ports of Final Fantasy VII, addressing the outdated and often problematic nature of the 2013 Steam edition.

It's a great time to revisit the original Final Fantasy VII if you missed it originally or want a nostalgic trip before the Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy concludes. With hints of 'more updates than ever before' for the trilogy this year, fans are eagerly anticipating the announcement of Part 3. Meanwhile, Part 2, Rebirth, is set to release on Switch 2 and Xbox later this year, making FF7 accessible to a wider audience.
