The We Were Here series has always been a masterclass in cooperative gameplay, and at IGN Fan Fest 2026, fans got a glimpse of its exciting new direction. The freshly revealed trailer for We Were Here Tomorrow shows the beloved co-op franchise venturing into uncharted territory. While earlier installments confined players to the mysterious halls of an abandoned castle, this upcoming title transports them to the retro-futuristic Norcek facility, complete with raygun aesthetics and perplexing new puzzles. The heart of the experience—frantic walkie-talkie communication where you realize your partner might not be as sharp as you hoped—remains intact, but it's joined by several fresh enhancements.
Creative director Martín Mittner from Total Mayhem Games shared insights into the evolution: "We're weaving a narrative that blends familiar faces with brand-new characters, plus we've introduced innovative tools for puzzle-solving and environmental navigation. We've also put significant effort into refining the walkie-talkie system to keep players immersed in the game rather than switching to external apps like Discord."
For those new to the series' chaotic communication dynamics, We Were Here games typically assign two distinct roles: the Explorer and the Librarian. The Explorer tackles puzzles through physical interaction, while the Librarian deciphers crucial information visible only on their end, relaying it via walkie-talkie to guide their partner.
Design director Thijs Schippers elaborated on this dynamic: "What really excites me is amplifying the asymmetry between players, giving each a truly unique perspective and role throughout the entire playthrough. This philosophy is deeply embedded in the DNA of We Were Here Tomorrow."
Both developers highlighted how the shift from snowy castles to the Norcek facility not only offered a creative refresh but also opened doors for novel environments and puzzle mechanics. Mittner teased, "If you enjoyed the 'mind-bendy puzzle' from We Were Here Forever—like the one inside a D12 die with dimensional warps—get ready for more. We're introducing capstone puzzles that are equally trippy. It'll be fascinating to watch players navigate these. Plus, there's a unique storytelling element I can't delve into too deeply, but it promises to diverge from past titles and spark intriguing player interactions around the narrative."
We Were Here Tomorrow is set to launch on PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Don't forget to visit Steam and add it to your wishlist.
