Bluepoint Games, the developer celebrated for its acclaimed remakes of Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls, reportedly proposed a remake of Bloodborne last year. Contrary to widespread belief, it wasn't Sony that rejected the idea—it was FromSoftware, according to a new Bloomberg report.

The report sheds light on the reasons behind Sony's decision to shut down Bluepoint earlier this month. Following its acquisition by Sony, Bluepoint had been developing a live-service God of War title after contributing to God of War Ragnarok. This project would have featured Atreus descending into Hades, with various iterations of him engaging in cooperative battles. However, the concept never fully came together, and Bluepoint, known for its expertise in traditional action games, proved ill-suited for the venture. The game was canceled in January 2025.

After the cancellation, Sony encouraged Bluepoint to pitch new ideas. The most logical proposal was a remake of the 2015 masterpiece Bloodborne, which earned a 9.1/10 score from IGN. For years, fans have clamored for a remake or sequel, with persistent rumors suggesting one might be in development. Many assumed Sony, as the IP owner, was the obstacle preventing FromSoftware from moving forward. But Bloomberg's sources indicate otherwise: Sony was reportedly interested, but FromSoftware declined, leading to the project's abandonment.

Bloodborne's future has long been uncertain, with conflicting statements from those connected to the game. In 2024, FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki stated it was "not in my place" to discuss a Bloodborne remake since FromSoftware doesn't own the IP. He also told Eurogamer that the game would benefit from a release on modern hardware. The following year, PlayStation's Shuhei Yoshida speculated on KindaFunny about the situation, which may align with what happened to Bluepoint's pitch.

The mystery remains: why would anyone pass up such a clear opportunity, or not allow a studio like Bluepoint to take the lead? FromSoftware is currently focused on The Duskbloods, a vampire-themed game exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2. Meanwhile, Bluepoint reportedly pitched other ideas, including an updated Shadow of the Colossus and a Ghost of Tsushima spinoff, before Sony closed the studio. Sony's leadership believed Bluepoint lacked the capability to develop its own games and couldn't secure a suitable partnership. According to Bloomberg, some companies are in talks to potentially rescue the studio from Sony, but it's unclear if these efforts will succeed.
