Saber Interactive has confirmed that its highly anticipated remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remains in active development, offering a brief but reassuring update after years of silence. In a recent interview with IGN, Saber's chief creative officer Tim Willits responded to inquiries about the project's status with a straightforward statement: "Yes, it is still in development. That's all I can say."
This news will come as a relief to the dedicated fanbase of the classic RPG, originally created by BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age. The remake was first announced in 2021, but no official updates or footage have been shared in the five years since.
A December 2025 report from Game File indicated that Aspyr is no longer leading the development, with the project reportedly transferred to Mad Head Games, the team working on the upcoming Hellraiser: Revival. The same article also suggested that discussions have taken place regarding a potential remake of the sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2.
Douglas Reilly, vice president of Lucasfilm Games, elaborated on these plans, stating, "Juliet was the codename for a project where we were going to do a full remake of KOTOR II with modern art, modern gameplay, you know, keep the story and the characters and the general content of KOTOR II, but remake it for modern hardware and modern machines with updated graphics and all those kind of things. It was something we were discussing with Aspyr."
While it remains uncertain whether these broader remake plans for the Knights of the Old Republic series will materialize, development on Saber's original remake appears to be progressing. This update follows the recent reveal of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic at the 2025 Game Awards, a new single-player RPG set in the Star Wars universe, led by former KOTOR director Casey Hudson. The question now is whether fans will get to play this new title before the Knights of the Old Republic remake arrives.
