Official sales data shows Crimson Desert has sold 4 million copies in under two weeks, but what does that translate to in earnings? An industry analyst has crunched the numbers and come up with a staggering figure.

Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at Alinea Analytics, shared in a Substack post that Pearl Abyss's open-world action-adventure title has generated approximately $200 million across all platforms—PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Notably, Elliott estimates that $75 million of that total comes from PS5 sales alone. This overwhelming success demonstrates a clear demand for "high-fidelity, single-player-focused sandboxes," according to Elliott.

"Crimson Desert has silenced skeptics (and the stock market...), who worried that a mixed critical reception might dampen long-term consumer interest," Elliott remarked. He pointed to Pearl Abyss's initial stock price drop, likely tied to the game's Metacritic score in the high 70s, followed by a rebound as player feedback turned positive and sales figures impressed.

Elliott also highlighted that 38% of PS5 Crimson Desert players have also experienced Dragon’s Dogma 2, a much higher crossover rate than typically seen with titles like Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. "Weird and wonderful RPG fans, let’s go," he quipped.

It's important to note that Pearl Abyss doesn't pocket the entire $200 million—console manufacturers Sony and Microsoft, along with Steam's Valve, take their customary cuts. Still, there's no denying Crimson Desert is a commercial triumph. Korean business reports indicate Pearl Abyss invested seven years and around 200 billion won (about $133 million) in development. Last week, CEO Heo Jin-young announced the game is approaching 5 million sales, suggesting strong staying power and improving profit margins over time.

Naturally, questions arise about future content. Currently, Crimson Desert has no microtransactions or in-game store. CEO Heo Jin-young recently stated there are no concrete plans for DLC and expressed uncertainty about official mod support, though a Nintendo Switch 2 version is reportedly under consideration.
