Overwatch has revealed a refreshed in-game appearance for Anran, one of its newest heroes, after players and the character's voice actor expressed dissatisfaction with her original facial design.
The update comes in response to initial criticism from the community and voice actor Fareeha, who portrays the fire fan-wielding damage dealer. Fareeha had stated that "this was a hill worth dying on," referencing concerns that Anran had fallen victim to what some call Overwatch's "Same Face Syndrome."
This term describes the perception that many female heroes in Overwatch share strikingly similar facial features, regardless of their backgrounds—from Swedish Brigitte and British Tracer to Japanese Kiriko, Martian Juno, and, until now, Chinese Anran.
Back in February, Blizzard acknowledged the need for a redesign, saying, "we agree that she can be even better." Now, the results of those adjustments are finally here.
In a video shared on Overwatch's social media, game director Aaron Keller explained, "I wanted to take a moment to share the updated version of Anran's in-game look. We aim for our heroes to feel unique, with visuals that match their personalities, and we felt we didn't quite achieve that when Anran first launched."
Keller continued, "We believe she should appear older and that her original version was too innocent and playful. Anran is confident, determined, fierce, and a natural leader, and we want her in-game appearance to reflect that. So, we tweaked her face, focusing on her eyes, eyebrows, and mouth. We moved away from that baby face look and expression toward something more sincere and mature. Even simple posture changes help Anran feel more like herself! We're thrilled with how these changes turned out, and she now bears a closer resemblance to her brother Wuyang."
In a related tweet, Blizzard announced, "In Season 2, we're introducing an updated look for Anran. She didn't fully land as the fiery and fierce sister of Wuyang we envisioned. With this update, our team focused on strengthening her overall presence. This evolution reflects both our creative intent and the..."
Keller added, "We have five more heroes arriving this year, and we want all of them to feel authentic. Going through this process has really helped the team fine-tune the next set of heroes. So, please, keep sharing your feedback."
Replying to the official game account, Keller noted, "We're really happy with how Anran's personality shines through with these changes. Personally, I'm encouraged by what the team can achieve when players advocate for our game!"
Season 2 of the revamped Overwatch kicks off on April 14, with a new hero set to be fully revealed on Wednesday, April 8. For all the details, stay tuned to IGN.
