No Man's Sky's newest expansion, the Xeno Arena update, introduces a Pokémon-inspired system that allows players to nurture, train, and battle the alien creatures scattered throughout the universe.
Developer Hello Games explained, "Most planets you've explored have always been alive with wildlife. Now, for the first time, those creatures aren't just companions—they can become your squad and potential champions!"
This update marks the debut of turn-based creature battles in the long-running space exploration game. Players will journey across the cosmos, assemble teams of creature companions, refine their genetic traits, and prove their worth in simulated combat arenas. With hundreds of unique battle abilities available, you can face off against new alien characters, tackle daily challenges, and more to stay engaged.
Patch notes from the No Man's Sky website are provided below.
Hello Games founder Sean Murray shared additional insights:
"We've spent a decade filling our universe with an endless array of creatures, from dinosaurs and flying cows to robots and gaseous blobs. Initially, you could discover and name them... but we wondered: what if all that diversity served a gameplay purpose? What if you could collect them, breed them, keep them as pets... and also battle them?
"As big fans of Pokémon, Palworld, and World of Warcraft's pet battling, we've integrated that inspiration. Now, when you encounter a rare robotic creature on a distant purple planet, you can examine its abilities and uncover powerful attacks like a neutron blast. This adds a fresh layer to exploration, turning rare creatures and beautiful pets into exciting assets to showcase in the Arena.
"These holo-arenas are located in Space Stations and the Nexus. Players can pit their pets against friends, strangers, and NPCs for substantial rewards. It's a legitimate progression path in the game, featuring daily challenges with top-tier prizes. This is essentially a full multiplayer experience with immense depth, now embedded within No Man's Sky.
"Each species has unique elemental affinities tied to their xeno type and home world. For example, a blob creature from a toxic planet has different abilities than a flying dino from a frozen moon. Rarer biomes are tougher to locate but yield rarer creatures, which require more preparation to battle against.
"Some creatures are exceptionally rare—legendary variants with unusual and exceptional stats that can be incredibly valuable. Sharing knowledge and creature locations with other players fosters its own intriguing economy.
"Once discovered, creatures can be trained, bred, or genetically modified to create new variants and unique colors. Feeding, bonding, and sparring enhance their abilities over time. We're particularly proud of the satisfaction in watching a scrappy little creature from a desolate moon evolve into a formidable arena champion.
"The Xeno Arena itself is a new multiplayer structure you can build and open to other travelers. Challenge friends to creature battles, host tournaments, or journey across the galaxy to take on other players' arena champions. Ranks, leagues, and future seasonal rewards will keep the competition thriving.
"2026 marks 10 years since our launch, and I couldn't be prouder. Reaching such a milestone is a privilege for any game, made possible only by your ongoing support, which we deeply appreciate.
"Our journey continues."
