The cybercriminals who breached Rockstar Games' systems have announced they will publish stolen data online after their ransom demands went unmet. The hacker group ShinyHunters reportedly accessed Rockstar's Snowflake data warehouse through Anodot, an AI analytics platform the company uses for cloud-cost monitoring, by posing as a legitimate internal service. ShinyHunters had set an April 14 deadline with the ultimatum "pay or leak."

In response, a Rockstar Games spokesperson told IGN that "a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed" and emphasized that the incident "has no impact on our organization or our players." However, ShinyHunters informed the BBC that Rockstar refused to negotiate, prompting them to follow through with their threat to release the data. The BBC describes ShinyHunters as a group of English-speaking cybercriminals, likely teenagers, known for data theft and extortion, with previous breaches including Ticketmaster and corporate cloud storage systems.

Globally, law enforcement advises against paying ransoms to cybercriminals, as it perpetuates such activities and offers no assurance that stolen data will be deleted. Rockstar maintains that the leaked information is insignificant and won't affect players or company operations, but the exact nature of the data remains unknown. If ShinyHunters proceeds, details could surface soon.

This isn't Rockstar's first encounter with major leaks. In 2022, over 90 videos and images from an early version of GTA 6 were leaked in one of gaming's largest security breaches, prompting Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick to express frustration, stating, "We take leaks very seriously indeed and they disappoint all of us, it's really frustrating and upsetting to the team." Then, in December 2023, the first GTA 6 trailer leaked on X/Twitter less than a day before its scheduled premiere, forcing Rockstar to release it early on YouTube. Developers voiced their annoyance online, and Zelnick later called it "disappointing" but insisted it didn't harm the company.

GTA 6 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S on November 19, 2026.
