Crusader Kings 3 is set to receive a major new expansion titled 'By God Alone,' which will introduce playable popes and theocracies to Paradox Interactive's grand strategy game. This marks the first time in the franchise's history that players can take on the role of religious leaders, adding fresh layers of gameplay centered around influencing the Christian church.
Lead designer Mikael Andersson explained, "With 'By God Alone,' we're expanding how players can engage with their Christian faith and the church. It offers more strategic choices for interacting with this institution and other rulers who share your beliefs." The expansion is scheduled for release in Q3 of this year as a paid addition, giving players ample time to strategize on leveraging divine authority to their advantage.
During a video reveal, Andersson detailed how the expansion will enhance the church's role: "We're making the Christian church feel like a living entity by revising tax collection from temple holdings, making it clearer how funds are gathered and allowing some player direction. To reflect the historical upheavals of the faith during the Crusader Kings 3 timeline, we're introducing 'rites'—local variations in practice that players can interact with."
The same video also unveiled another core expansion, 'Silk & Silver,' which will enable players to immerse themselves in medieval merchant life by establishing trade routes and competing with rivals. Additionally, a free update is available today, introducing age-related ailments for older characters and a new system for personal, character-bound stories within the game.
Crusader Kings 3 is a dynasty-focused strategy game rich with drama, marriages, and feuds. These expansions promise to deepen the already robust mechanics of a title that IGN's 2022 review hailed as "a new king of historical strategy."
