After nearly 30 years of speculation, Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya has officially confirmed that Leon S. Kennedy is indeed named after the 1994 movie Léon: The Professional. The Capcom veteran and action game icon revealed the inspiration for one of gaming's most iconic horror protagonists in a simple post on X/Twitter today. This puts an end to decades of fan theories that already suspected Leon's name originated from the film, but it's still a welcome confirmation.
Kamiya recalled naming Leon while consulting with Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. After several ideas were rejected, the director said (via Google Translate), "Well, why don't we just take it from that movie I watched the other day?" Kamiya added, "And his response was simply, 'Yeah, that works.'"
Resident Evil fans had long drawn connections between Léon: The Professional and Leon S. Kennedy. Beyond the obvious name similarity to Jean Reno's character, the series has famously featured a "Professional" difficulty setting for years. Additionally, the Matilda handgun used by Leon in some games was assumed to reference Natalie Portman's character Mathilda. However, Kamiya clarified that this reference wasn't his idea but was added by someone else at Capcom after he left.
Fans quickly reacted to the revelation, which ended speculation dating back to the original sequel's 1998 release. Kamiya said the reaction was unexpected, joking that he's surprised he hadn't mentioned the connections before, as it wasn't something he tried to hide.
Kamiya directed Resident Evil 2 before creating a stylish new direction for action games with the original Devil May Cry. He later led classics like Okami and Viewtiful Joe before leaving Capcom to co-found PlatinumGames, which produced titles like Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and The Wonderful 101. After leaving PlatinumGames in 2023, he started his new studio, Clovers, which is helping Capcom develop Okami 2.
Kamiya's influence on Resident Evil remains strong. Beyond the hugely popular Resident Evil 2 remake in early 2019, Leon has stayed a key gaming figure thanks to the Resident Evil 4 remake in 2023 and Resident Evil Requiem, released this past February.
