RGG Studio has finally unveiled the details of its next major title, Stranger Than Heaven. Originally teased as Project Century at The Game Awards in 2024, the game was officially named last summer. During a 30-minute Xbox presentation, the Yakuza developer showcased extensive new gameplay footage, revealing a game that's a significant departure from the Yakuza series. Set across half a century, the story begins in 1915 with protagonist Makoto Daito sneaking onto a ship to escape his life in San Francisco after his parents' death. He heads to Japan, but on board, he meets Orpheus, a ruthless smuggler voiced by Snoop Dogg. Orpheus exploits Makoto's Japanese language skills and cultural familiarity, pulling him into a life of crime. Makoto grows ambitious, seeking power in Japan, and eventually enters the entertainment industry while leveraging his criminal connections.

As time progresses, the world evolves. Makoto travels to different cities based on his life stage and goals, preventing the world from becoming static. New mini-games unlock depending on the era and location. The world is highly layered, with businesses to explore and a dangerous criminal underworld to uncover.

Combat is more grounded than Yakuza but offers deep mechanics. Players have buttons mapped to specific body parts—right bumper for a right punch, left trigger for a left kick—encouraging thoughtful strategy over button-mashing. Contextual animations, like tackling an enemy on stairs, add brutal realism. A wide variety of melee weapons can be found, purchased, and upgraded, with hints of firearms as well.

A unique non-violent mechanic involves collecting sounds from the world—animal noises, weapon clangs, train sounds—and composing original songs. Makoto can also manage a band, arrange performances, and control his calmer side. The game's soundtrack features musicians like Tori Kelly, who produced an original theme song.

Stranger Than Heaven launches in winter 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC. Xbox Game Pass subscribers get it on day one.
