The beloved adventure game series Broken Sword is heading to the big screen, thanks to production company Story Kitchen. According to Variety, an adaptation is actively in the works, with writer Evan Spiliotopoulos—known for live-action Beauty and the Beast and GI Joe spin-off Snake Eyes—penning the script. No director is attached yet, but franchise creator Charles Cecil is on board as a producer.
Details on which specific games or elements will be adapted remain scarce, but the prospect is exciting. Broken Sword is a staple of the adventure genre, following an American lawyer and a French journalist as they uncover mysteries and conspiracies. A sixth game, Broken Sword 6, was announced in 2023 but has been quiet since. More recently, a Kickstarter for Broken Sword Smoking Mirror: Reforged - Collector's Edition raised £743,138 from 4,833 backers, far exceeding its £50,000 goal.
Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Michael Lawrence Goldberg issued a joint statement, expressing their vision to work closely with the game's creators. "Very few franchises of this era have stayed relevant, premium, and loyal to the intelligence of their audience. Broken Sword has done all three," they said. "Our work here isn’t to adapt a game into a film. It’s to move a world that has been building for three decades into the next medium it deserves, working hand-in-hand with the people who built it."
Revolution Software founder and CEO Charles Cecil added, "Story Kitchen came to this project with a deep passion for the IP. That’s rare. The creative conversations have been about translating what Broken Sword is, rather than what it can be made to look like. I am hugely excited to be working with Story Kitchen and Evan."
This isn't Cecil's first attempt at a Broken Sword movie; he worked with studios in the late 2000s to bring the series to theaters, but it never materialized. Video game adaptations are now in higher demand, and Story Kitchen is a major player. The company is currently developing adaptations of Split Fiction, Sleeping Dogs, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and has released projects like the Sonic the Hedgehog films and Netflix's Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.
