Clint Hocking, the former creative director behind the iconic stealth franchise Splinter Cell, has argued that advancements in lighting and shadow technology are making it harder for both players and developers to navigate the genre. In an interview with FRVR, Hocking—who led the development of 2005's Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory—explained that modern rendering techniques create more realistic lighting, which ironically undermines the clear visual cues that stealth games rely on.
"I actually think one of the difficulties with modern stealth games is that the sophistication in the rendering has made lighting so much more realistic," Hocking said. He contrasted this with older games, which used baked lighting to produce "very clean and readable" environments. "But once you get into this diffuse and ambient occlusion and all of the stuff that comes with it, it gets very hard to tell what’s light, what’s shadow, what’s dark, what’s safe, what’s dangerous."
Hocking noted that realistic lighting systems, including direction, can be tricky to manage when gameplay demands players lurk in shadows. "When you go and see a play on a stage, the lighting is often super dramatic. So, you can do it with real lights. It’s just that, you know, these places are often lit to be very realistic and not lit to be aesthetic for stealth gameplay."
He described this as a "tough bridge to cross," especially since industry veterans have spent two decades pursuing graphical realism. Meanwhile, Ubisoft has reaffirmed that the long-awaited Splinter Cell remake is still in development, despite layoffs at Ubisoft Toronto. In February, the company cut 40 jobs as part of broader cost-saving measures, but Ubisoft assured IGN that the remake's progress remains unaffected.
Details on the remake are scarce, with no release window announced. However, positive news emerged late last year when original director David Grivel returned to the project after leaving Ubisoft in 2022. As for Hocking, he departed Ubisoft in February after working on Assassin's Creed Hexe, an upcoming entry with a witchcraft theme. Here's hoping more news on the Splinter Cell remake emerges from the shadows soon.
