IO Interactive has given fans a glimpse of what to expect from the first content update for 007 First Light, and it looks like a treat. After completing the main story, players will spot an advertisement in the game's main menu hinting at new content for TacSim, the challenge mode. The ad confirms a future update will introduce the Valhalla Protocol, a mission featuring the souped-up Aston Martin that makes a brief appearance in the main campaign.
While the car's role in the story is small, the new TacSim update appears to add a larger driving course where players can blast and blow things up. This marks a significant departure from existing TacSim content, which currently consists of a handful of on-foot objectives. Although car chases are a staple of Bond lore, 007 First Light only includes a few brief, linear driving sequences. There's no release date for the Valhalla Protocol yet, but hopefully it arrives within the next few weeks.
IO Interactive is best known for the Hitman series, which has thrived thanks to extensive post-launch support. Whether 007 First Light will receive similar long-term support remains to be seen, but it's encouraging to see plans for notable new content already. Only time will tell if this becomes a regular occurrence.
007 First Light is off to a strong start, earning critical acclaim. In our review-in-progress, we called it "the best Bond has been since GoldenEye." Other reviewers have echoed that sentiment. While sales performance is still uncertain, hopefully the game succeeds so IO Interactive can deliver more James Bond adventures. The studio has previously expressed interest in making a trilogy of Bond games, but it's unclear what milestones First Light needs to hit to make that happen.
