Activision Dubs Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 'The Epic Conclusion,' Leaving Fans Speculating About the Future

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is being marketed as the 'epic conclusion,' hinting at the end of an era for the franchise.

In the social media copy for the latest trailer, Activision described the game as an 'epic conclusion' to the Modern Warfare saga. It remains unclear whether this marks a permanent end to the current Modern Warfare universe or simply the conclusion of the storyline that began with the 2019 reboot.

While it could just be marketing hype, the timing is noteworthy. Earlier this week, Treyarch design director Kevin Drew said the studio was ready to 'make something new and something that nobody's ever experienced before.' His comments came as the studio wrapped up two consecutive Black Ops games, the most recent of which was seen as a disappointing misstep for the series. This has led fans to speculate that the Black Ops series might be ending or at least taking a hiatus, paving the way for Treyarch's first new subfranchise in nearly two decades.

Some fans are already saying goodbye to the current Modern Warfare series. 'Reboot it again,' one fan joked on the Call of Duty subreddit. Another suggested, 'They should do a COD Ghosts 2 or Infinite Warfare 2, both underrated campaigns,' possibly in jest.

If both Modern Warfare and Black Ops are truly ending, it would be the first time since Black Ops debuted in 2010 that the series lacks at least one active subfranchise in rotation. Although Sledgehammer Games' current project is unknown, it's likely a new subfranchise, as Advanced Warfare and the studio's subsequent World War II titles failed to gain traction.

The original Modern Warfare trilogy concluded in 2011 after just three games. While the team considered a fourth game then, they didn't get far and instead created Call of Duty: Ghosts.

After Ghosts and Infinity Ward's follow-up, Infinite Warfare, disappointed fans, the studio returned to its roots and rebooted Modern Warfare. The 2019 title is widely credited with pulling Call of Duty out of a multi-year slump where fans were losing faith. It also introduced Warzone, the hugely popular battle royale mode that has helped sustain the series since launch.

During the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast, Activision confirmed that Death Stranding star Mads Mikkelsen will play a major antagonist in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The game is set to release on PC and consoles—but not on Xbox Game Pass—on October 23.
