Pearl Abyss, the developer and publisher behind Crimson Desert, experienced a dramatic surge in its stock price today following the announcement that the game has sold 3 million copies. This rebound comes after a significant drop in share value around the game's launch, highlighting a volatile market reaction.

On March 19, Crimson Desert launched as an open-world action title, quickly selling 2 million copies in its first day alone. Over the next four days, it added another million sales, reaching the 3 million milestone by March 24. Despite this strong commercial performance, the initial reception was mixed. On Steam, the game attracted nearly 250,000 concurrent players but received 'mixed' user reviews, with players criticizing clunky controls and performance issues like blurry visuals on both PC and PS5.

Concurrently, Pearl Abyss's stock price plummeted nearly 30%, largely attributed to negative critic reviews, and fell another 9.78% the day after launch. The company invested seven years and approximately 200 billion won (around $133 million) in developing Crimson Desert, making the stock decline particularly notable.

However, the tide has turned as Pearl Abyss released updates that improved the game. Crimson Desert's Steam reviews have shifted from 'mixed' to 'mostly positive,' with English reviews now rated 'very positive.' The Metascore stands at 78, complemented by a user score of 8.1. Reflecting this positive shift, Pearl Abyss's stock, which was down 2.51% yesterday, jumped 23.34% today. While the share price hasn't fully recovered to pre-launch levels, sentiment has clearly improved.

Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Japan-based game industry consultancy Kantan Games, commented on social media, noting, 'Now, investors are having a 'Whoopsie' moment. Happens in Asian markets all the time with game stocks.' This encapsulates the rapid change in investor outlook.

Looking ahead, Pearl Abyss and Crimson Desert still have room for growth, with further patches expected to enhance the game.
