Arc Raiders has announced it will only release two major content updates per year, a decision that has left many players unhappy. In a recent blog post, Embark Studios confirmed that the next big update, Frozen Trail, will arrive in October, introducing new locations, enemies, story expansions, and progression system improvements. The studio explained that it aims to deliver large, impactful updates rather than drip-feeding content throughout the year.

"Going forward, we've made the decision to release major updates twice a year – larger in scale, more impactful, with the goal to genuinely change how you play the game," the post reads. "Don’t worry, a dedicated live service team will continue running ARC Raiders day-to-day: regular live updates, plus balance fixes, bug fixes, store updates, and player events aren't going anywhere."

Despite the reasoning, some fans believe this approach is misguided. Given how quickly player attention can shift, they worry that infrequent updates won't sustain the player base. One user sarcastically recalled claims of Arc Raiders being a "Fortnite killer," questioning if a live service game can survive on just two big updates per year. Another user noted that the main complaint has been a lack of follow-up content, and the response is to reduce updates.

Live service games face fierce competition for player attention. Fortnite's regular updates, which often overhaul gameplay, have kept it relevant for nearly a decade. Other games like Battlefield 6 have faced criticism for sparse content, though Season 5's promise of three maps instead of two may signal a turnaround.

Arc Raiders still has a strong player base, but numbers have dropped from hundreds of thousands of concurrent players at launch to around 100,000 or less since spring. It remains to be seen how longer gaps between major updates will affect these numbers, or if the bi-annual updates can meet expectations.

In the meantime, Arc Raiders will continue receiving smaller updates. Next week, a new trader offering weekly rotating unique and rare rewards will be added, available from level 25.
