Witcher Author Andrzej Sapkowski Open to Unconventional Adaptations, Including a Musical

Andrzej Sapkowski, the creator of The Witcher, is open to even more unconventional adaptations of his fantasy series, from musicals to anything else that might come along.

The Witcher has already been adapted into nearly every major format imaginable, from the hugely popular video games and Netflix's live-action series to animated films and comics.

In a recent in-depth interview with Sapkowski and his English translator, David French, we asked the author if there are any experimental formats he'd like to see The Witcher explore, such as a major stage production akin to Game of Thrones.

"Does a musical count as a stage play?" he responded. "If so, there have already been two. What else? I'm open to suggestions. Even unconventional ones."

Indeed, Geralt of Rivia has already ventured into musical territory, and Sapkowski appears unwilling to set limits on what might come next. After all, the franchise has spent years expanding well beyond the books that first introduced Geralt.

Moreover, there's no shortage of Witcher projects on the horizon. CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Remastered is set to launch on September 29, while the surprise new expansion Songs of the Past is planned for 2027. The Witcher 4 is currently targeting a 2028 release and will feature Ciri in the lead role.

The publishing side of the franchise is also growing, with full-cast audio drama adaptations of Sapkowski's books arriving through 2026 and 2027, starting with Crossroads of Ravens before moving on to The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny.

Netflix's live-action The Witcher is also heading into its fifth and final season, now expected in 2027 after an apparent delay.

Of course, Sapkowski himself isn't slowing down. The author has confirmed he is already writing his next Witcher novel, with a targeted completion date of 2027.

He also told IGN that he is considering a return to the short-story format that originally introduced many readers to Geralt, suggesting there is still plenty of room to explore the Witcher's earlier years.

Whether that next novel will offer another glimpse of a young Geralt remains to be seen, but Sapkowski's response when asked if there was more room to explore that period of his life was short but sweet: "Room? Sky is the limit."
