Overwatch is celebrating its 10th anniversary, but not all players are in a celebratory mood. Many fans expected more from the in-game event, and the backlash has slowed the momentum Blizzard’s shooter had built since dropping the '2' and rebranding back to Overwatch. Initially, the event required players to grind matches and objectives for loot boxes containing new colorways and old skins—a letdown for long-time fans expecting something grander for such a milestone. Game director Aaron Keller quickly responded on social media, promising increased and easier-to-obtain rewards in weeks two and three, guaranteeing at least 10 legendary skins. Additionally, a season-long event in Season 3 will offer even more rewards, expanding the weekly Play N Games tracker, with other ideas planned for later in the year. However, some feel this still isn't enough for Overwatch's 10th birthday, especially when compared to the exclusive skins and rewards given to Chinese players for the same occasion. Blizzard's Walter Kong acknowledged this in an interview with IGN: 'With hindsight, we had to recalibrate and act quickly, hence the adjustments. Development constraints limit how much we can pivot, but we saw the feedback and agreed change was needed. We view the 10th anniversary as more than just this event—we want the whole year to celebrate Overwatch. Releasing 10 heroes this year was part of that, and we'll do more to show gratitude for player engagement.' The exclusive Chinese content stems from Blizzard's partnership with NetEase. Kong explained: 'NetEase publishes our game in China and tailors content to that market. Our goal is to make all players feel valued, and we fell short here. Moving forward, we'll evaluate events holistically to ensure balance.' Overwatch has seen a resurgence since dropping the '2' and announcing 10 new heroes. This year marks a 'new, story-driven era' with a year-long narrative and major overhaul, starting with Season 1 on February 10. Both Blizzard and fans hope this event is just a minor setback. Kong remains optimistic: 'I'm happy with where the game is today. The play experience is strong, refined over time, and our approach has become more collaborative with players. I'm very optimistic about the game's future and the franchise overall.'
