Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is expanding the ways players can customize their operators in-game. The recently launched beta has given fans a sneak peek at many features, maps, and content heading to the full release. Some aspects, like fluid movement and a new system that randomly generates gun builds, were heavily promoted before launch. However, one hidden feature allows players to equip various cosmetic items on the fly. For instance, Ghost can remove his mask (which humorously reveals another cloth mask underneath) and put it back on. Valeria can don a hockey mask, and Captain Price can light up a cigar that stays visible in first-person view until you take it out. This feature, dubbed 'Operator Variant,' is accessed via the emote wheel, as shown in a tweet. It's a fun addition that will likely be leveraged in premium skins. While specifics on MW4's skins are unknown, Call of Duty has promised a more grounded approach after fan backlash to previous games, stating there will be 'no Lady Gaga, no Omni-Man, no Teletubbies, no SpongeBob.' Fan reactions to the beta have been mixed, with some concerned about the game's pace, especially on smaller maps. The time-to-kill is very fast, but Infinity Ward has been responsive to feedback, releasing patches addressing TTK and spawns, and planning improvements to the gunsmith system for launch. In an interview with IGN, Jackie Reynolds, MW4's multiplayer design lead, emphasized the beta's importance: 'This beta feels like the start of the conversation with the public. We're excited to put it out there and see what happens next. We want to keep talking, keep learning, and find out what we can do better.'
