Call of Duty: Warzone players will soon have the option to disable over-the-top Operator skins thanks to a new toggle. Activision announced that starting with Season 1 of the upcoming Modern Warfare 4, a new Operator Skin toggle will let players see only Modern Warfare 4 Operators in the game.
When enabled, the toggle replaces any Operator or Operator Skin from other Call of Duty titles equipped by other players with a Modern Warfare 4 Operator. This applies to enemies, party members, and squadmates, both in the lobby and during matches, according to an Activision blog post.
Your own selected Operator remains unchanged, so you'll still see the character you picked, even if it's from another game. The toggle only affects your own view, not others' experiences, and is off by default.
Operators and weapons from Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7 will still be available in Warzone starting Season 1, including any skins, blueprints, and camos you've earned or purchased. "The collection you've built remains yours to use, and existing plans for Carry Forward for previous titles are not affected with this update," Activision stated.
"Over the last few years, Call of Duty: Warzone has brought together Operators, weapons, and experiences from across recent Call of Duty titles in one shared experience," Activision continued. "We know some players enjoy that variety, while others would prefer Call of Duty: Warzone feel more aligned with the world of the latest release, including the upcoming Modern Warfare 4."
This news comes as a relief to many Call of Duty fans who have criticized the outlandish skins, especially in Black Ops 6. With crossovers like Beavis and Butt-Head and American Dad appearing shortly after weed-themed bundles featuring Seth Rogen, some players felt the game was becoming too much like Fortnite and urged Activision to return to its military simulation roots. Those complaints led to a change in direction for last year's Black Ops 7, partly due to pressure from rival shooter Battlefield 6 and its focus on "gritty realism."
In May, Infinity Ward told fans to "keep the receipts" after promising to keep cosmetics grounded in Modern Warfare 4.
But why not add this toggle to Black Ops 6? In a social media post, Activision explained that the toggle "required new tech that will only be available starting with Season 01."
Regarding Warzone, Activision said all weapons from Modern Warfare 2 through Black Ops 7 will remain accessible via the Legacy tab in the Loadout menu. While these weapons can still be used, Gunsmith functionality and previous Custom Loadouts will not be supported for legacy weapons or blueprints. However, they won't be left without attachments; instead, a five-attachment version of each legacy base weapon will be available, along with any blueprints for legacy weapons with their existing attachment setups.
"Our goal for this chapter of Call of Duty: Warzone is for the weapon meta to feel distinctly rooted in Modern Warfare 4, while preserving access to nostalgic choices that players know and love," Activision said. "Raven Software will continue to deliver on its commitment to balancing weapons on a biweekly basis, keeping the MW4 weapon lineup fluid and interesting throughout each season."
