Fortnite Overhauls Fall Damage and Zero Build in Massive Update Featuring Overwatch Heroes

The highly anticipated Fortnite x Overwatch crossover has arrived, bringing Tracer, Genji, and other heroes from Blizzard's hero shooter to Epic Games' battle royale island. But the update doesn't stop there—it introduces significant gameplay changes, especially in Zero Build mode.

In Fortnite's main battle royale mode, fall damage is no longer lethal. Players now "splat" on impact and survive with 1 HP, forcing them to heal up quickly.

Zero Build mode has received a major overhaul, including a new unlimited-use "Pocket Item" randomly assigned at the start of matches. These items can be Shockwave Grenades, Medmist, or Shield Bubbles. Glider redeploy has returned when leaping from high areas, and you can now cut your glider close to the ground for a speed boost (at the risk of taking some fall damage). Equipping your pickaxe provides unlimited stamina, and eliminations grant overshield to encourage aggressive play. To balance this, environmental cover like walls and crates is now stronger, and Reboot Van timers have been reduced for faster squad revives.

Alongside Overwatch-themed locations such as Hanamura, King's Row, and Busan Drum Pavilion, players are particularly enjoying Tracer's pulse pistols, which shift Fortnite's third-person action to first-person and allow blinking and time rewinding. This is one of the best crossover items in recent memory.

Fortnite has had a rough start to 2026, with major layoffs in March following declining interest in its battle royale mode. Analysts told IGN that fewer players in the veteran mode is just one issue, compounded by costly legal battles with Apple and Google, investments in the Epic Games Store, and the explosive growth of Roblox, which dwarfs Fortnite's creator-made modes.

Despite these challenges, updates like this show Epic Games can still impress with fresh changes. Fortnite lore fans also get new content, including confirmation of The Paradigm's fate (the character previously voiced by Brie Larson), the return of another fan-favorite character, and a major hint about who is controlling the Dark Voyager.
