Fortnite has officially announced that The Foundation, the heroic character voiced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, is set to make a comeback in the upcoming season. The game has kicked off an Avengers: Doomsday-inspired countdown to mark his return.

A cinematic teaser trailer released today shows The Foundation trapped in ice, captured by The Ice King, a significant figure in Fortnite's lore. Players anticipate they'll be able to rescue The Rock's character in the battle royale mode's next season, which launches in just over a week.

Today's teaser also unveils the official name for Epic Games' next Fortnite season and cleverly mirrors the phrasing from recent Avengers: Doomsday teasers to confirm the return of key characters. "The Foundation and The Ice King will return in Fortnite: Showdown," the teaser declares, followed by a date (March 19, 2026) and a countdown clock displaying the time left until the update arrives.

The teaser introduces a new in-game location, which appears to be an enhanced and more detailed version of The Ice King's classic Polar Peak fortress. Earlier in-game hints had alluded to this icy palace, suggesting it houses one of the game's current Zero Point shard macguffins.

This hints that the new Ice King might be collaborating with Fortnite's current villain, The Dark Voyager, to reassemble the Zero Point's shattered shards for sinister purposes. However, previous Fortnite lore from graphic novels depicted the original Ice King as a more honorable figure who freezes entities he deems a threat to reality. Fans speculate that The Dark Voyager could be corrupting former Fortnite characters like Lynx to serve his agenda, or perhaps the Ice King has truly turned to the dark side.

The original Ice King was an enigmatic character who imprisoned someone in his dungeon during Fortnite's first chapter, a detail recently revisited in the Fortnite OG mode that retells the game's original story. In today's teaser, the new Ice King is shown holding multiple captives, including the golden skeleton lady Orelia and Marvel's Steve Rogers, though the latter might just be another nod to Doomsday.

The teaser ends with The Ice King approaching The Foundation, frozen mid-punch. How The Foundation will escape remains a mystery, but one thing is clear: with updated designs for both The Foundation and The Ice King showcased, fans will have exciting new skins to collect next season.

In recent weeks, several surviving members of Fortnite's heroic Seven faction have reappeared in the game, including a new version of The Visitor voiced by a recognizable actor. While Fortnite has yet to officially confirm Dwayne Johnson's return to his role, fans likely won't have to wait long to hear The Foundation speak again.
