Sony Santa Monica has announced that God of War Laufey will no longer launch in February, shifting its release to May 20, 2027. The studio explained that the extra time is needed to deliver a game that meets fan expectations, and promised to share more details soon. A reveal could come at The Game Awards, or perhaps a new State of Play before the end of the year or in early 2027.
Previously set for February 16, 2027, that window had become extremely crowded, especially after titles like Fable moved from fall 2026 to early 2027 to avoid the massive shadow of GTA 6. The delay gives God of War some breathing room and also benefits other games that might otherwise be overshadowed by a major first-party PlayStation release.
God of War Laufey has drawn skepticism and criticism from some gamers, partly because Kratos has been sidelined as the main character. As a result, Santa Monica Studio needs to be at the top of its game and deliver something exceptional. If anything falls short of expectations, the internet will ruthlessly pick it apart, whether fair or not.
The decision to delay must have been made relatively recently, as the studio had just announced a collector's box designed to coincide with the February release. It's unclear if that box will also be delayed, since it doesn't include the game and is just a box of merchandise.
God of War Laufey is poised to be one of the biggest games of 2027, continuing the story Sony Santa Monica set in motion back in 2018. Although Laufey is the protagonist, the game is expected to overlap and connect back to the last two entries, with Kratos also playing a role. The larger implications for the universe remain unclear, but it seems like a significant expansion of the franchise. A new Kratos-led God of War game is also actively in development.
