Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding, has voiced concerns about a 'frightening' all-digital future, days after Sony revealed plans to cease production of physical PlayStation discs by January 2028. Speaking at the Il Cinema in Piazza film festival in Rome, Kojima expressed his dismay, stating, 'Since production is ending in 2028, this is about video games, but I grew up with physical media, so I find it really sad. Currently, I’ve been buying up a lot of Blu-rays and CDs.' While he didn't directly name Sony, his comments clearly reference the company's decision.
Kojima, known for his love of physical media, previously warned in 2021 that individuals might lose access to data. At the festival, he elaborated on the shift to streaming, noting that while downloaded games remain on hardware, streaming services like Netflix or Amazon only grant temporary access. 'You don't actually possess the data yourself,' he cautioned. 'If the server stops distributing, you won't be able to watch or play the movies and games you like. That is what is frightening.'
Recent events have fueled frustration among physical media fans. Rockstar Games announced that the physical version of GTA 6 will include only a download code. Sony's decision has drawn widespread criticism, and the company appears unlikely to reverse it. Additionally, Sony informed digital movie buyers that they would lose access to over 550 films, even if purchased. As the PS6 and Project Helix consoles approach, the industry seems to be moving toward digital-only gaming, a trend Kojima and many players find alarming. He urged everyone to 'keep that in mind' as similar changes could affect movies.
Kojima Productions recently completed Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and his next project, OD, is reportedly safe at Xbox despite recent studio closures. For more, read why one IGN writer considers PlayStation's physical media-free future offensive.
