Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer known for the power ballad 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' and the rock anthem 'Holding Out for a Hero,' has passed away at the age of 75. A statement on her official Facebook page announced that she died 'unexpectedly' last night in a hospital in Portugal. 'Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,' the statement read. 'We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.' Tyler had been rushed to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she lived, in May for emergency intestinal surgery and was placed in an induced coma. She emerged from the coma last month but remained in intensive care. Reports at the time indicated her condition was improving, with even talk of tour dates later this year. Tyler rose to fame with the 1983 rock opera 'Total Eclipse of the Heart,' one of the biggest songs of the 1980s, though she recently revealed she saw little financial gain from it. The song was solely written by Jim Steinman, so publishing royalties go to his estate, while the master recording is owned by Sony Music, which shares a percentage with Tyler based on her 80s recording contract. Despite this, Tyler said she never tired of singing the song. 'It's quite an evergreen song,' she told the BBC. 'How many times have you heard it popping up in adverts and movies? People just love it.' Her music has been featured in numerous video games, including 'Just Dance,' 'Singstar,' 'We Sing,' and notably, 'Holding Out for a Hero' appeared in Saints Row: The Third and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, while 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' played during the intro of Battlefield 4.
