Marathon is expanding its offerings to attract more players, including a new PVE-only mode. While the game has found a dedicated fanbase, it may lack broad appeal. Bungie seems aware of this and is taking steps to make the game more accessible.

In a detailed blog post, Bungie outlined its future plans for Marathon. The biggest content reveal is a brand-new PVE mode arriving in Season 2. This experimental mode removes player-versus-player combat, focusing instead on cooperative objectives, fighting UESC bots, and progressing in a less chaotic environment. Another mode will offer "PVE with a light touch of PVP," though details are vague.

For those worried about PVP taking a backseat, Bungie assured that a pure PVP mode is also in development as part of experimental offerings. The goal is to create a game that balances tense, competitive gameplay with more relaxed experiences, catering to different moods without requiring constant high-stakes commitment.

Bungie also plans to improve the onboarding experience for new players while deepening content for veterans. The general roadmap for Marathon through 2026 is as follows:

  • Season 2: New PVE mode and other updates
  • Future seasons: More experimental modes, including pure PVP
  • Ongoing improvements to onboarding and core gameplay

While Marathon has a passionate player base, some potential fans were interested in Bungie's signature gunplay but didn't enjoy the extraction-based modes. This new direction seems aimed at those players, hoping to expand the community.

Sony recently reported that despite positive reception, Marathon's underperformance contributed to a $765 million impairment loss after acquiring Bungie. This move appears to be part of Bungie's efforts to boost the game's numbers. Bungie plans to support Marathon for years, but Sony has shown it's not afraid to shut down studios, as seen with the closure of Bluepoint Games.
