NBA 2K25 is set to be removed from digital storefronts after only two years, and players will soon lose access to the game's single-player story mode.
Released in September 2024, NBA 2K25 is the latest NBA title to be pulled from digital stores. 2K will stop selling the game on October 30, 2026. Additionally, online servers will be shut down on January 1, 2027. Consequently, the game's multiplayer modes and MyCareer, the single-player story mode, will become unplayable. MyCareer relies on online connectivity, as progression and virtual currency are tied to server access. Without servers, the mode cannot function.
Those who purchase NBA 2K25 before October 30 will still be able to download the game and play offline modes at any time. You can read 2K's full statement below.
"As of January 1, 2027, you'll no longer be able to play multiplayer games or access any online game modes. MyCAREER and MyTEAM will no longer be available, and it will no longer be possible to earn Virtual Currency (VC). While you will still be able to enjoy Play Now, MyNBA, The W, and MyWNBA, any features that require a connection to 2K servers will be unavailable. This includes multiplayer, Online Leagues, and community sharing."
While it's not uncommon for much older games to have their servers shut down, 2K has been delisting and shutting down recent NBA games over the past few years. Although only a small fraction of players likely still play these titles—since the player base typically moves to the latest game—it's still a disappointing move. It forces players to upgrade to new games, whether they want to or not. While most sports games have modest iterations with each new entry, some remove features and modes, meaning certain legacy content becomes completely inaccessible.
If you were a fan of NBA 2K's standalone All-Star Team-Up mode, it's no longer available because previous versions were delisted and taken offline. This also means that much of your effort in MyCareer is rendered somewhat futile, as it has an expiration date. However, given that fans continue to buy the series, it doesn't seem to be hurting the franchise.
