Nier: Automata, the acclaimed 2017 action RPG from director Yoko Taro and developer PlatinumGames, has officially surpassed 10 million copies sold worldwide. This remarkable achievement comes nine years after the game's initial release, cementing its status as a modern classic.
The announcement was made through official social media channels, with both the Nier franchise and publisher Square Enix sharing celebratory posts. The news was accompanied by special commemorative artwork and a retrospective video highlighting the game's journey over the past decade.
In an official press release, Square Enix also revealed that Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139, the 2021 remake of the original Nier, has reached 2 million copies sold.
The six-minute retrospective video showcases the extensive legacy of Nier: Automata, featuring not just the game and its various re-releases and ports, but also numerous concerts, stage presentations, written works, and animated adaptations. The video concludes with a tantalizing message: "Nier: Automata to be continued..."
While this might suggest another game is in development, longtime Nier fans have learned to temper their expectations. The franchise has expanded through multiple mediums over the years, including a now-unavailable mobile game that served as a direct sequel, but no major PC or console follow-up has materialized since Automata's release.
Even series creator Yoko Taro has expressed weariness when questioned about future projects, noting that while he continues to develop new ideas, many have unfortunately been canceled.
This is particularly disappointing given Nier: Automata's enduring appeal. When originally reviewed in 2017, the game earned an 8.9/10 score for its "crazy, beautiful, and highly entertaining journey full of nutty ideas and awesome gameplay." While its narrative and characters might not follow conventional storytelling, its frenetic combat system, stunning visuals, and unforgettable soundtrack created an experience that remains compelling years later.
