PlayStation has broken its silence on social media for the first time since revealing plans to end physical disc production for new games—and the reaction is predictably brutal.
On July 1, Sony stunned the gaming world by confirming it would stop manufacturing physical discs for new PlayStation titles starting in 2028. The announcement tweet has racked up a staggering 165 million views, but for six days afterward, PlayStation went completely quiet.
Fans hoping for a reversal or even an acknowledgment of the backlash were left disappointed. Instead, PlayStation's first tweet after the disc bombshell was a promo for a fight stick.
"Switch out lever gates with ease on the FlexStrike wireless fight stick," the post read, complete with a link and a video featuring talking heads who are now facing the full fury of PlayStation fans.
The replies are a flood of anger over Sony's silence on the disc issue. The fight stick tweet has already amassed hundreds of thousands of views, and the responses are overwhelmingly negative. Here's a taste:
"Sony there's something you should address..."
"Wireless fightstick? More like spineless corpo. Feel sorry for everyone involved in that project. They are the sacrificial lamb for the next tsunami of criticism towards you, Sony. All we care about is that you reverse the decision to strip everyone of ownership over their games."
"Give us physical discs"
"THEY TWEETED!!! GET EM 🫵"
According to IGN, Sony is unlikely to back down despite the outcry. The company's stock price actually rose after the announcement, suggesting investors approve of the move (unsurprising, as it could boost profits). One analyst argued that physical media fans had their chance and missed it. "If gamers and preservationists had bought more physical games, Sony wouldn’t have seen the digital sales ratios that justify this decision," Robin Zhu of Bernstein told the Financial Times. "Digital game sales carry essentially 100% incremental margin… the cost of the physical package, shipping and retailer margins can be more than 20% per cent of sticker price."
Now, Sony faces the prospect of every future announcement being drowned out by complaints about the death of physical media. There's an element of ripping off the Band-Aid here—PlayStation's next tweet would have faced the same backlash regardless of the product. But unlike PlayStation discs, those comments aren't going anywhere.
