The PC launch of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has been riddled with technical issues, prompting popular fighting game content creator Maximilian Christiansen, known as Maximilian Dood, to uninstall the game during a live stream. The game, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and developed by Arc System Works, has faced severe backlash from PC players since its August 6 release, with many reporting performance problems and stuttering.
Maximilian Dood, a prominent figure in the fighting game community (FGC), expressed his frustration during a stream on August 7 titled "Last day with PC version, sheesh." He stated, "This is bad, chat. I don't think I can play this anymore. It's making me like the game significantly less. The game is un-fun when we have to deal with all this. It's un-fun. It's fun coming up with solutions and stuff like that to issues, to combat, but you can't do anything. You just have to watch it stutter like crazy."
The PC version has received overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam, with only 44% positive ratings initially, dropping to 41% across all languages and 39% in English, earning a "Mixed" and "Mostly Negative" rating, respectively. Despite Arc System Works' promise to investigate the issues, no proper fixes have been implemented as of yet.
During the stream, Maximilian Dood decided to abandon the PC version, saying, "I've pretty much come to the conclusion I have to, probably, abandon the PC version. The next time we stream, I'm going to exclusively be playing the PlayStation 5 version – that's it. It's too frustrating. I'll have to just unlock everything all over again. There's no cross-progression, so I'll have to figure that out, but the PC version is too frustrating. It's too frustrating running a gambit of this even working, to being really frustrating, to knowing that the PlayStation version, you can only play PlayStation people and be completely fine."
In contrast, the PS5 version appears to be running smoothly. Maximilian Dood even hosted a separate stream titled "PS5 version works, thank god," and later posted on X/Twitter: "Tried Tokon on PS5 against only PS5 players and had a wonderful time. Even with 3 bar, 100+ ms, matches were smooth. Just going to stay away from the PC version completely until things get figured out."
As the weekend ends without resolution, the future of Marvel Tokon on PC remains uncertain. Fans are left wondering if Arc System Works will address these issues or if the PC player base will continue to dwindle. In the meantime, players can read IGN's review of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls and explore the evolution of Marvel fighting games, as well as Maximilian Dood's involvement in the upcoming Street Fighter movie.
