Capcom's Q1 report for fiscal 2026 is out, and it's causing concern among gamers. The data reveals that an overwhelming 93.3% of Capcom's sales for the quarter were digital, covering both new releases and older titles. Physical media accounted for just 6.7%, a figure that has players worried given Sony's plan to stop producing physical discs for PlayStation games starting January 2028.
Digging deeper, 60.4% of digital sales were on PC, while only 32.9% were on consoles. This isn't surprising since PC gaming has largely moved away from physical discs over the past decade, but it's still noteworthy.
The news has sparked debate online, with fans questioning whether the digital sales figure includes DLC locked behind digital-only purchases or how it breaks down per game. We don't know how much older game digital sales contributed (like the recent Resident Evil Steam sale) or how many new releases drove the numbers, though Capcom credited the Resident Evil series for much of the surge.
Resident Evil has seen a huge popularity boost recently, becoming the third best-selling franchise in Japan, behind only Pokémon and Mario. There's also a shift in the series' top seller: Resident Evil 2 has finally overtaken Resident Evil 5 as the best-selling entry, ending RE5's 15-year dominance.
While the exact breakdown of Capcom's sales data remains unclear, it highlights the bleak future of physical media, especially after Sony's unpopular decision to stop producing game discs. Despite players voicing their opposition through comments and even planning a PlayStation blackout, the numbers speak for themselves—players are increasingly going digital.
Capcom, however, has no plans to stop physical disc production. In a shareholder Q&A, the company stated it will continue making physical discs as a 'significant number' of players still demand them.
