While anticipation for GTA 6 is at an all-time high, Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to defy expectations with impressive sales. The Rockstar Games title sold more copies in the past year than in any 12-month period since its 2018 launch.
As of March 2026, Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold a staggering 85 million copies worldwide. Although this is just over a third of GTA 5's monumental 230 million sales, it's enough to push it past Wii Sports and claim the third spot on the list of best-selling games ever.
The game's enduring popularity makes Rockstar's refusal to release a 60fps patch for current-gen consoles all the more puzzling. Fans have long demanded an update for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but despite persistent rumors, Red Dead Redemption 2 remains locked at 30fps on these platforms.
Meanwhile, Red Dead Online has consistently trailed behind GTA Online in both updates and revenue, leaving fans to wonder what could have been if Rockstar had given the multiplayer mode equal attention.
Speculation about Red Dead Redemption 3 continues to swirl. Late last year, Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser hinted that a third installment is inevitable, saying it "will probably happen." In 2023, Arthur Morgan actor Roger Clark expressed certainty that fans will see Red Dead Redemption 3 "one day," though he admitted he has no idea when. Even Hollywood actor Jack Black has weighed in, revealing which character he'd love to portray in a potential sequel.
For now, Rockstar's focus remains on GTA 6. But once that game launches and the next phase of GTA Online is underway, many hope the studio will revisit its iconic Wild West franchise.
