God of War Laufey's director, Ariel Lawrence, has addressed the "skepticism" surrounding the game's reveal, expressing hope that fans will give it a chance.

The game was unveiled as the big "one last thing" during this week's PlayStation State of Play, generating both excitement and backlash. Some criticism stems from Faye, Kratos' wife, taking the lead role instead of the God of War himself. Others feel the game doesn't stray far enough from Kratos' story, as it retains the same one-shot camera style from the previous two titles.

In an interview with GameSpot, Lawrence acknowledged the doubts but urged fans to keep an open mind. "I understand the skepticism," she said. "I hope they will give it a chance and be excited to play. For me, it's about whether it's fun and offers an adventure I haven't experienced before. The biggest challenge is holding onto the surprise. It's hard to be surprised today—everyone always knows how things will play out. So I'm hopeful we can still maintain some mystery."

Speaking with GamesRadar, Lawrence acknowledged fans' deep connection to God of War, which typically centers on Kratos. Even Domino's Pizza weighed in, suggesting a God of War game without Kratos feels wrong. However, she views the intense reactions as a positive sign of the franchise's importance. "We have to honor that everyone has their own connection to God of War stories. Some are hesitant, some are all in. I'm just happy people care. If we had put something out and people were like, 'It's okay,' that would be more disheartening. But strong feelings? Great. I hope to win over the skeptics."

Sony Santa Monica has confirmed that Kratos still has many stories ahead and remains vital to the franchise—Laufey won't replace him. What's next for Kratos is unclear, but Laufey might conclude the Norse saga. Ragnarok seemed to wrap up that era, but since Laufey runs parallel to the last two games, it could provide the true finale and set up Kratos' future.

IGN also had an extensive conversation with Lawrence and Cory Barlog, director of 2018's God of War and head of creative at Sony Santa Monica, revealing new details about the studio's plans for the game and the franchise. Be sure to check it out for answers to lingering questions.

God of War Laufey is set to release on PS5 at an undisclosed future date.
