Paramount Pictures and Activision have confirmed that the upcoming Call of Duty movie will be set in the long-running Modern Warfare universe. The announcement came during a Call of Duty in Culture Panel at Fanatics Fest in New York City, where director and co-writer Peter Berg shared the news (via Variety). Berg, along with co-writer Taylor Sheridan, chose the Modern Warfare setting, which may surprise some fans but offers hints about the film's plot. The Modern Warfare series began with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007, introducing a more contemporary take on the franchise with characters like Soap, Ghost, Captain Price, and villain Vladimir Makarov. Over the past two decades, the series has evolved through six main entries and remasters, focusing on Task Force 141's global missions. After a mid-2010s hiatus, Activision and Infinity Ward rebooted the series in 2019 with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which continues with the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, launching on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on October 23, 2026. It's unclear why Paramount and Activision chose Modern Warfare over other series like Black Ops, and Berg didn't specify if the film will adapt existing game events or create new ones. The Call of Duty movie is set for release on June 30, 2028, with plot and cast details still under wraps.
