In a recent blog post, Rockstar Games hinted at an 'exciting' new update for GTA Online arriving this summer, fueling speculation about what it might entail given that GTA 6 is scheduled for release in November.

Rockstar typically drops two major GTA Online updates each year: one in summer and another in December. With GTA 6 launching on November 19, 2026, could this summer update signal a shift for GTA Online?

'After 13 years and nearly 50 content updates, the end is almost here. Hopefully, they send this game off with a bang,' one fan commented. Another wondered, 'They don't say it'll be the last, but are we ready to say goodbye to Los Santos after 13 years?'

Rockstar has offered few details. The blog post concludes: 'There’s also plenty more to look forward to in GTA Online, including a variety of special events and celebrations, along with an exciting new update this summer.' Naturally, fans are speculating. Will Rockstar launch a new version of GTA Online alongside GTA 6, or later? What happens to the current GTA Online when the new one arrives?

There's no indication that Rockstar will abruptly shut down GTA Online servers when GTA Online 2 (or whatever it's called) launches. Notably, GTA 6 is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in November, with no day-one PC release, where GTA Online remains hugely popular.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously hinted that GTA Online could continue after GTA 6—given its ongoing revenue, that makes financial sense—but how that would work remains unclear. Perhaps GTA Online will follow Red Dead Online's model, receiving small, bite-sized updates that don't drastically change the game.

'I'm going to speak theoretically only because I'm not going to talk about a particular project when an announcement hasn't been made,' Zelnick told IGN last year. 'But generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles. As an example, we launched NBA 2K Online in China in 2012, then NBA 2K Online 2 in 2017. We did not sunset Online 1. Both are still in the market, serving consumers, and we have this massive audience. So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to engage with them.'

Concrete answers are coming soon. GTA 6's big marketing push is set for this summer, and fans are going to extreme lengths to predict the GTA 6 Trailer 3 release date. Similarly, we'll likely hear more about the next GTA Online update in the next month or two, as summer updates typically drop in June or July.

Could Rockstar use GTA Online to tease GTA 6? They previously used GTA Online to market Red Dead Redemption 2, adding an in-game treasure hunt that unlocked an old-school revolver in GTA Online. It wouldn't be surprising to see similar in-game events building up to GTA 6.
