If you own a digital copy of Grand Theft Auto V on Xbox One or PS4, you'll be eligible for a free upgrade to the current-gen versions starting tomorrow, June 18. Rockstar Games announced this while detailing GTA Online's next big update, arriving in July. Only digital copies qualify, and upgrades are likely limited to within the same console family (e.g., PS4 to PS5). As always, you can transfer all your progress to the new version. Since GTA 5 costs $39.99 on current-gen consoles, this is a great deal. Rockstar is making it easy for players who haven't double-dipped yet. The current-gen versions have been available since March 2022, offering a smoother experience with 60 FPS, though not a massive leap from last-gen. This offer partly aims to boost interest in the upcoming heist-themed update, but another big reason is GTA 6's release this November. Sales for GTA 5 may soften as fans prepare for the next installment, so it makes sense to give GTA 5 one last big push. As for GTA 6, no details on its online mode have been released, so it's unclear if progress will carry over. After 13 years of building a life in GTA Online, some fans hope to bring their goodies to Vice City, but a fresh start wouldn't be surprising. Fans are eagerly awaiting the next GTA 6 trailer, expected this summer. Rockstar might wait until after the July update to avoid distractions.
