Rockstar Says GTA 6 Won't Get 'Too Specific About Any Particular Person, Event, or Movement,' Notes GTA Has Never Been About 'National Politics'

Rockstar isn't looking to make a political statement with GTA 6, a game that explores love, passion, and the erosion of the American dream. And honestly, their reasoning holds up. Rockstar has never shied away from controversy—GTA 5 famously tackled the effectiveness of torture and government black sites—and GTA 6 will likely follow suit.

But they draw the line at satirizing real-world political moments. If GTA 6 had created an NPC named Melon Husk who shoots rockets into space and acts a bit odd, by launch time that character wouldn't account for all the terrible things their real-life counterpart has done since. These games take years to make, and nobody wants to end up as dated as a Borderlands joke.

"If you look back at previous GTAs, there's never really been much focus on national politics," Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's senior vice president of narrative, told Love Magazine. "The rise of Homeland Security and the Patriot Act were pretty central to GTA 4, but that was mainly because post-9/11 New York was a real frontline for those issues."

"Because we're trying to make games that feel very specific to the moment they're released, but at the same time, not reflective of the exact world we live in, we don't want to be too specific about any particular person, event, movement or anything like that."

Instead, the focus is on capturing the essence of Florida—all the wild Florida men and women, cops, and gangbangers the developer met on research trips for GTA 6. "We've really tried to build out our world—filling it with all the characters and culture wars necessary to make it feel alive," Humphries said.

"And then we have so many ways to tell these stories outside of actually meeting characters face to face. You can see a sign for an election, receive a robocall from a campaign, or hear a commercial on the radio. And then we have some great political talk shows on the radio too where they discuss all these issues."

The goal is to tell it all through satire, making it larger than life. Rockstar isn't avoiding themes and contemporary topics, but rather than holding up a mirror and saying "remember this?" it's attempting to explore those topics through its own original characters and scenarios.

GTA 6 features dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia, who embark on a crime spree across a fictionalized version of Florida called Leonida. The local NBA team, the Miami Heat, will wear GTA 6-themed uniforms in an upcoming match to celebrate the game's launch.

GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles on November 19, 2026. It's expected to generate up to $5.2 billion in sales by the end of its launch week. The previous game continues to break records—GTA 5 has sold over 200 million copies across consoles and PC.
